“Don’t fail by not trying.” ~ Kenny Aronoff
I had the most fantastically strange day. Sharon and I were out and about in the Bluegrass on a gorgeous afternoon. We stopped by Kroger to pick up a few things; a Kroger location I’d never been to before. We made our way to the produce when I suddenly found myself looking into a face so familiar it rattled me. Last night I learned that Troy Gentry had tragically died in a helicopter crash. I played a few gigs with Troy years ago before he hit it big as Montgomery Gentry. The gig came about because of Jay Goldenberg, one of the guitarists in the best band I was ever in called U.S. 27. At the time, Troy was looking for a band to help him out with a benefit. U.S. 27 became that band. When I heard about Troy’s accident I began to wonder about Jay. We hadn’t seen each other in probably 15 years, and eventually lost touch over time. Then – BOOM – between the bananas and apples in a Kroger I’d never been to before, I stood looking into his still beautiful blue eyes. I was thrilled to see him to say the least, and totally taken aback at the timing given that Troy had passed only 24 hours earlier. As Sharon and I agreed; there are no coincidences. I bet I see more of Jay in the near future, and I was so happy to hug him today. He’s been an important man in my life.
