unexpected gifts

I started taking a yoga class with Anita Courtney at Dudley Square in early 2020, and not long after the first session, her beloved husband and city councilman, Jake Gibbs, died suddenly of a heart attack (I talked about it here). As one might expect, it was tragic for Anita and their daughters, and it was very sad for Lexington. It took a minute, but Anita pulled herself up by her brastraps and carried on. Our paths crossed again late last year when she began working on an oral history project with Fred Mills, aka Mr. Kentucky Theater. I’d recently loaded a hard drive with footage for Anita, but when I got into the office this morning, this gift had taken its place. Anita recently learned of Shero’s passing, and being the compassionate person that she is, she shared the gift that helped her. Anita is the real gift, and I am grateful for her.
