It was a great evening for a Blue Grass Trust deTour crew. Tonight, we had a deTour at Floracliff, a nature sanctuary in Fayette County along the Kentucky River. This hidden gem has been around in one iteration or another since 1913. It started with 250 acres from Mary DeWitt Snyder as a girl’s camp. In the 1950s, Dr Mary Wharton bought a nearby property. One thing led to another, Dr Wharton bought several more adjoining parcels, including the girl’s camp, and et voila! Floracliff was born. The lodge from the girl’s camp was placed on the National Register (I don’t remember the year). Dr Whaton’s intention was to turn it into a nature sanctuary, and that’s precisely what they’ve done. This isn’t like Raven Run open to the public during regular hours. Instead, they offer guided tours and special events. There’s plenty to do, it’s easy to sign up (most everything is free), and everyone at Floracliff is extremely knowledgeable about the flora and fauna of the area and excited to talk about it. I was excited to learn they do “Golden Hour” hikes down to the river. It’s the right time of year for that. Oh yeah, the BGT deTours crew are pretty awesome. A good time was had by all.
