Westville High

Yesterday, I mentioned Westville High School, home of the Yellowjackets with their purple and yellow school colors. This is it. Doing a little searching, I found that the school was built in 1936 as part of the Works Progress Administration (WPA). I would have bet the farm that the brick and terra cotta roof tile was not original, but according to this, at least the brick is original to the structure. “Westville School is made of gray limestone with an attractive red brick, sheltered, entrance way. The building serves as the high school and is a large, rectangular building. Visible on the porch are two stained glass windows with a large W in the center of each.” The next time I go back, I will get a closer look at the stained glass W windows under the porch shadows. I’d love to see the inside, too. To give some context for how young America is, Westville did not have its first school class until 1903, four years before statehood. It was a student body of one.
