“Beautiful young people are accidents of nature, but beautiful old people are works of art.” ~ Eleanore Roosevelt

break

I did something today I haven’t done in so long that I don’t even remember doing it. I took a break. A real break where you leave your desk, not to go do more work somewhere else like I always do, but to go somewhere and not do work at all. Honestly, I don’t remember the last time I took time that remotely looked like a restful break. My head is so full of stuff that has to be done right now that I reached a point after yet another meeting this afternoon where I left the building and just started walking. I wound up at the student center, got a bag of chips, and sat down for a nice round of people-watching. A job fair was happening, so the place was hopping with young people looking at potential employers and vice versa. I love being on a college campus, UK in particular. The first time I was on UK’s campus was about 1979. Mom, Peggy Stevens, and I came down to see Peggy’s son Rick Hayes in a play he was in, which was probably at the Guignol Theater. I thought so little of it that I don’t remember the play or the campus; I just remember the four of us together afterwards. Fast forward six years and I found myself in a little band (later known as Stealin Horses) playing a fundraiser on campus for upstart college radio station WRFL. Today’s Student Center sits approximately where that outdoor show took place. I liked the campus better the second time. Fast forward eight years and I found myself enrolled in the fine arts program as a non-traditional student. I’ve really never left since. As an employee, I’ve been treated unfairly at times, and given more opportunities than I should have at others, but it all seems to even out in the end. The one regret is not taking more breaks. There’s time to change that.
