“If I have the opportunity, in any given moment, to do the right thing, to offer a hand, to help right a wrong, to hold the door for someone else, to act as a good ancestor, and I choose to act on that opportunity, that’s my karma. What anyone else does with that moment– is theirs.” ~ Mary Carroll-Hackett

I bet it had been 12-15 years since I’d seen Kenny and even longer since I’d seen Erma, but when I walked into Janice Vance’s beauty shop to pick up Shero this afternoon, there they were. We didn’t get to visit too terribly long, but however long was great with me.

I spent so, so, so much time with them when I was a teenager they were like a second home to me. Erma is a fantastic cook, and Kenny has one of the best senses of humor on the planet. He’s wildly creative, too. In his retirement, he makes beautiful folk art, some of which can be seen in Janice’s shop (though not in these photos). I love them both very much and it was really great to hug their necks. I’m telling you, if you want to know anything about a small town – any small town in America – go to the beauty or barber shop. You’ll see everyone you know, catch up on all the happenings, and leave with a great cut.
