“‘What day is it?’ asked Pooh.
‘It’s today,’ squeaked Piglet.
‘My favorite day,’ said Pooh.”

I forgot it was my birthday until I’d been up a while. Greg helped remind me, though, as he often reminds me I am older than he. It was an emotional visit this time – laughter and tears – but it was a very, very, very good, important visit, and I was sad to put him on a plane. Selfishly I want to keep him here. Despite the goodbye, my sweet family helped me rise to the occasion as they celebrated my day of birth with dinner. They showered me with love and gifts way beyond what I deserved. I felt their love, too. It took the sting out of missing dad. This is the first birthday he didn’t call with mom to sing me happy birthday. But I’ve got them, my kin, and that helped more than I expected. Words fail, really. I will always remember this birthday, and I will always be grateful for another trip around the sun. So many never make it this far. Shoot, some don’t make it far enough to become AARP members, and that’s just pitiful. There are so many discounts at this age. And so much to be thankful for.
