“If you could only see your spirit as I see it, you would never doubt your perfection.” ~ Maria Martinez
I said yesterday was a great day, and it didn’t stop with the fabulous friend-filled lunch. Later in the day, Shero and I attended the opening night of a Grand Night of Singing at the Singletary Center for the Arts on UK’s campus. We spotted former governor and father to current governor Steven Beshear and his wife, Jane, in the audience before the show. Afterward, I left Mom at a lobby bench as I went to fetch the car, only to find her at the valet stand with Steve Beshear when I returned. That’s where she snapped the selfie below. Beshear and I exchanged pleasantries as he bid Mom farewell, promising to sing “My Old Kentucky Home” when she learned to play it on trumpet. It was their inside joke. Years ago, the governor attended one of the Morgan County DAV’s Memorial Day services when Mom played Taps on the trumpet at the ceremony. They struck up a conversation that day in which Shero told him she was trying to learn My Old Kentucky Home, and he quipped he’d sing it when she learned to play it. Mind you, the trumpet she used was electronic and played pre-programmed Taps. Her job was to make it look real. She won an Oscar for it more than once. Last night, she had the opportunity to remind him of their promise, and he, like a proper politician, played along whether he remembered it or not. And who knows, maybe he did, but his kindness made her day, and I sure enjoyed being around for that.
