Lilly did not improve overnight, so back to the hospital she went. Final conclusion: Stage 2 chronic Kidney Disease. I then learned how to administer fluids here at home and I have a topical cream to be applied to her ear that should act as an appetite stimulant. If we can get over this hump, she could last several months to two years and be happy. If she can’t pull out of this, well, that’s it. Turns out it’s quite common for cats to be going along just fine, and then, boom, kidneys stop working enough to make them sick. And so here we are. She showed no signs of distress until she stopped eating Wednesday. I’m afraid she’s not going to pull out of this, and I’ll have to say goodbye long before I’m ready. I am upset. My baby Ginsu has been my steady and constant companion for 16 years. Never sick a day. She wasn’t without hassle – what pet is? – but she is smarter than most dogs (and people). She plays fetch. She comes when I call her, and we have a language between us that only we understand. Like my beloved Sadie, she picked me. That is a gift.
