“We must never stop believing that beautiful things can happen in times of chaos.” ~ Unknown
Today was primary voting in Kentucky. I did my duty before going into the office. Meanwhile, the aunts and uncles, as they have done every year for many, many years now, converged on Morgan County to place their flowers at all their siblings’ graves and at their parents’ (additional sibling graves are in KY counties Powell and Magoffin, and Bethel, Ohio – it’s an all-day job for them). But first, they helped Tony set the base for a flagpole at Hero and Shero’s grave. I wanted it, and Lord knows I’d never get around to doing it because, hello, concrete, and they were kind enough to get it done. The base should be set by Friday, and the flag will be up before Memorial Day. That’s what teamwork does, and this family has always been about teamwork. They, we, wouldn’t have survived any other way. There aren’t sufficient words to describe how much I love and value my aunts and uncles. They have been with me through every step of this journey. I wish everyone had a family as dedicated to one another as mine. Sometimes patriotism is voting. Sometimes it’s taking care of those who served. And sometimes, it’s raising a flag and placing flowers on a brother and sister’s grave.
