Soon after last night’s assignment, I went back to my car parked at the recently remodeled Phoenix Park. They did a nice job with it, but I have to confess that, for the first time, I felt uneasy walking through downtown Lexington after dark, partly because I was weighed down by expensive camera gear. Even when it was still full daylight, I could see the center of town, here at Phoenix Park and across Main at the courthouse, was peppered with homeless people, mostly men. Some lay sleeping; others sat bent at the waist, staring at the ground. Still others were talking amongst themselves. As I stopped at a red light not far from Phoenix Park on Sunday, I saw a young man so high he leaned his head against a rock wall, his body trembling and swaying side to side, his sweatpants dropping, T-shirt riding up his shaking body. I prayed out loud for that poor man, sitting at that red light. There was nothing else I could have done. Back in 2022, long-time readers might recall I talked about the shocking number of homeless people in Los Angeles. Sadly, Lexington seems to be taking on a similar vibe more and more. At least a dozen homeless men are among the shadows of this photograph. To cleanse my mind of such social and human tragedy – a fate we’re all just one illness or accident away from sharing, to be sure –  I turned my attention to the beauty of a downtown sunset, thanking my lucky stars I have a bed to sleep in, food on my table, and a mind and body strong enough to keep it that way.
